Herstmonceux is a village with many claims to fame — moated castle, former Royal Observatory, science centre and home of the Sussex trug, a type of basket made from chestnut and willow. Herstmonceux, with its telescope domes, windmill and castle turrets, sits modestly between Wealden hills and marshy levels, its eyes on the skies and its feet on the ground.
In the village itself there are antiques and independent shops (selling trugs of course), pubs, restaurants and tea rooms, set amongst a mix of picture-postcard cottages and town houses.
