Batemans:

Surrounded by the wooded landscape of the Sussex Weald, this 17th-century Jacobean house, provided a much-needed sanctuary to renowned author Rudyard Kipling and served as an inspiration for his work. Bateman's is very much a family home that feels as though the family have just gone out for the day. 

Things to do at Batemans:

At Bateman's, you can discover rooms used by Kipling, including his study where he wrote Puck of Pook's Hill and other books and poems. Kipling's Rolls Royce car is also on display. Seasonal events take place throughout the year. 

You can also discover the wider estate with three waymarked walks of various lengths. Families can enjoy a natural play area in a secluded glen by the car park. Visit the working watermill, which dates back to 1750, located at the bottom of the wild garden.   

Stop for a treat at the Mulberry tea-room, serving delicious lunches and a selection of home-made cakes. Wherever possible, the tea-room uses estate-grown fruit and vegetables. End your visit with a browse around the gift shop and second-hand bookshop.
