Take a trip to Brede on the first Saturday of the month and meet the Brede Steam Giants, a collection of massive water pumping machinery meticulously restored by volunteers. Or get your walking boots on for a tour of Fuller's Follies, a series of bizarre structures near the village of Brightling commissioned by John 'Mad Jack' Fuller, a Victorian squire prone to outlandish wagers.
Hastings' two funicular railways are fun to ride as well as useful. The East Hill Lift, which takes you from the fishing quarter up to the Country Park, is the steepest funicular in the UK. The West Hill Lift, which takes you from George Street to Hastings Castle and Smugglers Adventure, still boasts its original carriages.
