At the outbreak of WWII, National Gallery director Kenneth Clark set up a scheme whereby the British government would employ artists to record the war effort. From Eric Ravilious and Edward Ardizzone to Laura Knight and Evelyn Dunbar, a remarkable group of artists created an unforgettable and immensely varied body of work. Widely exhibited at the time in Britain and overseas, this vast collection is not only a historical document, it is also a timeless testament to the human spirit and the capacity of people to endure hardship.
James Russell is an art historian, curator and author. He also contributed to Margy Kinmonth's new film 'Eric Ravilious: Drawn to War'.
