Hailing from the vibrant coastal city of Brighton, Monakis emerges as a dynamic force in the alternative music scene. Comprised of James Porter (Lead Vocal/Bass), Aaron Butler (Guitar), Deri Bovaird (Guitar), and Joe McTaggart (Drums), this quartet delivers a potent blend of grunge and punk that resonates with raw energy and unabashed intensity.
Drawing inspiration from the heavy-hitting sounds of 90s grunge icons like Nirvana and Alice In Chains, coupled with the rebellious spirit of 70s punk pioneers such as Joy Division, Monakis carves out their own sonic identity, which they aptly dub "Grunge Punk". Their music channels the visceral energy and angst-laden ethos of their influences, while infusing it with a contemporary edge.
Monakis is renowned for their electrifying live performances, where they ignite stages with their infectious energy and commanding presence. Their shows are not merely concerts but visceral experiences that leave audiences captivated and craving more. It's no wonder they've garnered a devoted following along the south coast and beyond, earning a reputation as one of the region's most exhilarating live acts.
The band's journey has been marked by notable milestones, including a sold-out self-promoted headline show at The Green Door Store and successful tours alongside international acts such as Kid Kapichi and SNAYX. Their music video for 'Say What You Want' has amassed over 90,000 views, showcasing the band's visual and sonic prowess to a global audience.
Monakis' debut EP Vol.1 has garnered acclaim from industry tastemakers, with support from BBC Introducing, Alyx Holcombe and Nels Hylton of BBC Radio 1, John Kennedy of Radio X, and Alex Baker of Kerrang Radio. With their relentless work ethic, undeniable talent, and fervent dedication to their craft, Monakis stands poised to make an indelible mark on the world of alternative music.
In a landscape craving authenticity and raw emotion, Monakis emerges as a beacon of unapologetic expression, proving that the spirit of grunge and punk is alive and thriving in the 21st century. Keep an eye on this band, as they continue to push boundaries, challenge conventions, and ignite mosh pits wherever they go.
