The 5th Quarter of the Globe

St Mary's Centre, Lion St, Rye, East Sussex, TN31 7HF
The 5th Quarter of the Globe

About

Come & create some evocative collages, centred around Derek Jarman and his time in Dungeness.

Derek Jarman often referred lovingly to Dungeness as "the fifth quarter of the globe", a quote from clergyman Richard Harris Barham's 'The Ingoldsby Legends'. This collection of ghost stories and poems, published in 1837, identified Dungeness and nearby Romney Marsh as the fifth quarter of the globe, proclaiming: "The World, according to the best geographers, is divided into Europe, Asia, Africa, America, and Romney Marsh".

In this three hour collage workshop participants will be working with various imagery of Prospect Cottage and its surroundings as well as text and photographs from Jarman's fascinating sketchbooks.

Participants will be able to create up to four Jarman-inspired collages of various sizes, expertly supported by Shelley from Ways of Seeing. Participants are encouraged to bring along any images or text they'd like to incorporate into their creation.

Sustenance in the form of tea, coffee and biscuits will also be provided.
