Blog (June 2020) - Visit 1066 Country

From its foundation by Augustinian canons to its dissolution by King Henry VIII, through to its current role as a centre for archaeological study, Michelham Priory is packed with interesting history. And it even features in Hilary Mantel's Wolf Hall trilogy. 

The first sculpture has been completed for the makeover of the 1066 Country Walk in East Sussex, with work set for completion in spring 2021. The 31-mile route, which begins at Pevensey and ends at Rye, is due to be transformed by Rother District Council thanks to a European grant of more than £160,000 from the Rural Payments Agency. 

The table is laid with cold smoked fish arranged with salted radishes, a rough-cut block of local terrine rests at one side next to a smoky peppered saucisson waiting to be sliced, a colourful salad crisp with condensation, dips in earthy hues, ramson hummus and petal-sprinkled pesto adorned with edible flowers, a rainbow of crudités, a sourdough loaf still warm from the oven, fresh shucked oysters, grapes, cherries and apples.
